Roller Skating: The New Workout On The Block

November 8th, 2021 at 6:35 am
When we were all stuck inside due to the COVID-19 pandemic, did you let your inner child out to play? With “Bored In The House” as TikTok’s unofficial lockdown anthem, playfulness became a popular way for people to pick themselves up. From escaping into colouring books and puzzles, to getting some fresh air by skipping and roller skating, childhood pastimes helped many of us relieve stress and feel joy again.
The roller skating revival in particular had everyone excited. Social media started seeing more and more videos of the pandemic hobby pop up, which were just as relaxing to watch. The liberating activity inspired many people to dust off their roller skates, or pick up a new pair, and go outside to feel the wind in their hair.
Other than being a fun and fabulous way to reduce stress, roller skating is also a great workout! It helps to improve strength, balance, core stability and cardiovascular endurance. Thinking of adding it to your exercise routine? Read on for more benefits and how to get started.
The Benefits Of Roller Skating
- Improves balance – If you’re too scared to roller skate because you’re a clumsy person, roller skating is the perfect way to improve your balance. The muscles used during roller skating, like your lower-back and abdominal muscles, will help better your balance. Even if you aren’t accident-prone, please make sure to always wear protective gear.
- Helps strengthen the heart – By increasing your heart rate from 140-160 beats per minute to 180 beats per minute, roller skating is a form of aerobic exercise that helps improve circulation. It also helps strengthen your bones, decrease blood glucose levels and improve cholesterol levels. Talk about a full body workout!
- Reduces body fat – When it comes to reducing body fat and strengthening your legs, roller skating is on the same level as jogging. However, unlike jogging, roller skating is easy on the joints while helping build muscle. You’ll be able to burn calories in a low-impact way.
